PHONE-SHAPED PIECE OF PLASTIC HELPS BEAT PHONE ADDICTION

The AcryPhone is a simple object, designed to mimic the look and feel of a smartphone in order to help users conquer their cellphone addiction.

As much as we try to deny it, most of us are addicted to smartphones. We try to limit the time we spend looking at them, but we constantly find ourselves instinctively reaching for them in search of that little dose of dopamine our brains want. That is just one of the many signs of an addiction that is serious and hard to beat. Luckily, we will soon have an alternative that looks and feels just like a smartphone but has none of the features that got us hooked on it in the first place.

Created by ekoD Works, the AcryPhone is literally just a fine piece of acrylic plastic shaped like a smartphone. It has no actual screen, no speakers, not even a tiny LED. It is just meant to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, while you slowly separate yourself from your actual smartphone.

The AcryPhone comes in two versions – the simple slab of acrylic priced at 3,300 yen (USD$25) or the more realistic 3,520 yen (USD$26.50) version which comes with a plastic-film screen protector, even though this thing does not actually have a screen.

The AcryPhone is compatible with standard smartphone cases as well as camera lens covers, if you want to make it look even more realistic.

You can already pre-order it at the ekoD Works website, and units are scheduled to start shipping next month.

Interestingly, the AcryPhone is not a totally unique idea. In 2014, we had the NoPhone, a piece off plastic shaped like an iPhone. The NoPhone ad campaign was quite amusing to read – under features, they mentioned things like “battery free,” “no upgrades necessary,” “shatterproof,” and “waterproof.” Next, we had the NoPhone Air, a concept that really took things to a whole new level. The NoPhone Air was just an empty phone package—with nothing but air inside.

The creators said,“We are very proud to introduce the least-advanced NoPhone ever. We took away the headphone jack. And then we took away everything else. It may look like nothing is in this packaging. But that is what is so beautiful about it!”
