MAN FINED FOR DYEING PUPPY TO LOOK LIKE PIKACHU

A Florida man was fined by Miami-Dade Animal Services after photos of his dog, with its fur dyed yellow to look like the Pokémon character “Pikachu,” went viral this week.

Pet shop owner Eric Torres and the yellow Pomeranian puppy were seen sitting courtside at a Miami Heat  NBA basketball game, but the dog had already been noticed earlier by animal protection officers during a previous inspection at Torres’ World Famous Puppies pet store in Miami.

Pikachu was in the pet store!” Kathleen Labrada, Assistant Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services, said.   “I saw a staff member holding the puppy in her lap.”

Labrada warned that it is “unlawful for any person to possess or sell, within Miami-Dade County, any dyed or artificially colored rabbit or other animal.”   One week after the pet shop inspection, Animal Services informed pet shop owner Torres that they were issuing a USD$200 citation.

It was the 16th citation for various issues filed against World Famous Puppies since they were licensed in March 2021.   Many of the citations came from customer complaints, claiming that the store sold them sick dogs.

Puppies are very delicate,” Torres said, in response to the allegations.    “They do tend to have very weak immune systems as they develop, and so it is the nature of the business that dogs do get sick.”

Torres said the dyed dog is his family pet and is not for sale.   He said he plans to appeal the citation and claimed the yellow dye is safe for dogs – so safe that he could eat it himself.

Torres plans on leaving the dye on the dog but will keep it outside of Miami-Dade County.

At the end of the day, I had no idea this rule even existed,” Torres said.   “It has been kind of freaking me out.”

Miami-Dade Animal Services said that they do not plan to remove the dog from Torres’ care.

When asked about the dog's going viral, Torres said proudly, “It has made NBA history because nobody has ever seen a Pikachu dog sitting next to an NBA player before.”
