The Holme, a 205-year-old London mansion, is currently on the market for an astonishing £250 million (USD$300 million), which makes it the world’s most expensive mansion.

Known as the “White House of Regent’s Park,” because of its resemblance to the original White House in Washington, DC, The Holme features 40 bedrooms, an eight-car garage, a tennis court, a sauna, a library, and a “grand dining room,” as part of its 2700 square meters of living space. Set on 4.5 acres of landscaped grounds alongside the Regent Park boating lake, the mansion is considered to be one of the most desirable private homes in London

A real estate agent says, “It is the White House in Regent’s Park. It is very special because you have got the beautiful lake, the wide lawns, and the magnificent rear façade which looks like the rear façade of the White House. It is the most incredible property.”

Built in 1818 for property developer James Burton, The Holme served as a residence for the Burton family, before being used by Bedford College for several decades. It became a private residence again in the 1980s and has been sold several times since then, for an astronomical price each time. Today, it is being sold for £250 million, the highest price set for any mansion, ever.

The iconic mansion was previously owned by members of the Saudi royal family but was recently repossessed by a bank after a loan of approximately USD$180 million was not paid.

According to luxury magazine Robb Report, The Holme is the most expensive mansion currently listed for sale anywhere in the world, passing the previous record holder for the “most expensive home” title, held by a three-story penthouse in New York City, which went on sale last September for USD$250 million.

The Holme is expected to draw the interest of both local British and foreign buyers, many of whom may not even consider living in it, preferring instead to add it to their investment portfolios.
