Imagine the surprise on Suzy Kop's face when she returned to her New Jersey home and found a hole in the second-floor ceiling, a divot in the floor, and a strange rock that was still warm to the touch in the corner.
Suzy, who lives in Hopewell Township, New Jersey, said that the police had a hard time believing what she suspected: that a meteorite had come crashing down from outer space and landed in her father's bedroom.
"The police were afraid that, you know, because it fell from the sky, that it was radioactive. Did we have a type of contamination on us? So, they scanned us, but everything came back clear," Suzy said.
This is the meteorite next to the divot on the floor in the bedroom where it landed.
The dark, metallic rock is 10 cm by 14 cm and weighs roughly two kg. It was still warm when Suzy touched it.
Hopewell Township police said that they thought it may have come from the Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which was peaking around that time.
Luckily, no one was home at the time that it came crashing through the roof.
The space rock is now headed to the College of New Jersey to be identified. They will also try to figure out exactly where it came from.
Maybe Suzy can make a purse out of it.
Meteorite strikes are not that unusual, but because most of our planet is ocean or open land, it is rare for one to strike a home or business.
In November of last year, another meteorite crashed into a Northern California home, setting it ablaze. And in April 2013, another meteorite crashed into a Connecticut home.
