DURIAN NOODLES TO GO ON SALE IN TAIWAN

In what has been described as a “crime against food,” a noodle shop in Kaohsiung is ready to offer durian-flavored ramen served in a hollowed-out durian shell.

Shanhetang Ramen (山禾堂拉麵) is responsible for this creation posted on social media. The restaurant said the dish will cost customers between NTD$680 (USD $22.67) and NTD$780 (USD $26) and will be available from their Gangshan branch, starting June 22. The pork bone ramen has a coconut milk and pureed durian base served with fresh durian pulp, with an optional century egg.

Internet users’ comments have ranged from “This is the most beautiful dish I have ever seen” to calling for strong punishment to be imposed on Taiwan because of it.

The old saying, ‘Ramen was born in China, got mastered in Japan, and died in Taiwan’ was actually a prophecy!” one Twitter user warned.

Brian Hioe sarcastically wrote: “Do you think that this gives China a reason to attack Taiwan, because this is an abomination that must be removed from the world! Or, maybe it will protect Taiwan from China because why would anyone want to conquer people who eat like this?”
Store owner Sun Hao-en said that he and his family are durian lovers and that he got the idea for the dish while visiting Malaysia. Sun said that store employees do not like preparing the dish and have to wear two face masks when preparing it to protect them from the fruit’s terrible smell, which has been described as similar to hot garbage, raw sewage, and/or sweat-soaked clothing.

Disturbing ramen dishes may be having their 15 minutes of fame in Taiwan, since this version comes after previous ramen dishes topped with whole frogs and isopods (sea creatures that look like giant cockroaches) made headlines recently.
