WOMAN IN YARD ATTACKED FROM THE SKY BY A HAWK AND A SNAKE

As she rode her tractor, Peggy Jones could not have foreseen that mowing the lawn on her six-acre Texas property would lead to a snake and a hawk both falling out of the sky and injuring her in an attack that, she said, left her bloody and psychologically drained.

Peggy was mowing an open field in the back of her property in the evening last month to avoid the triple-digit daytime heat.   Suddenly, a snake fell from the sky and wrapped itself around her right arm.  Seconds later, as she tried unsuccessfully to fend off the reptile, she was attacked by a swooping hawk.

"As I was trying to sling the snake off, the snake was biting me in my face," Peggy remembers.  "He hit my glasses a couple of times.  I could feel the pressure of the hit.   And he was not coming off my arm. It was like he was glued onto my arm."

While the snake, estimated to be at least four feet long, was still wrapped around her arm, a brown and white hawk suddenly appeared from the sky and also began attacking Peggy's arm.   It was trying to get the snake!  While the hawk was attacking her, the snake kept spitting liquids which Peggy suspects may have been venom.

"I was just saying, ‘Jesus, please help me. Help me, Jesus,’" Peggy recalls.

Finally, the hawk ripped the snake from her arm and took off, carrying it away.  The whole ordeal lasted only a few seconds, but it "felt like an eternity," Peggy said.

Still in shock, Peggy found her husband, Wendell, who was mowing the front of the property and showed him her injured arm.  They got into his truck and drove to the emergency room about 15 minutes away, where they were met by their daughter.

As she was trying to explain the bizarre situation to them on the way there, Peggy was having trouble seeing out of her right eye.  Once at the hospital, she was injected with antibiotics and given a prescription for more.  She thought she may have been bitten on her arm too, after seeing puncture marks.

However, the doctors said the injuries probably were from the hawk’s talons, Peggy said.  She spent her first night home after the attack waiting for her arm swell up and turn black.

Peggy said she knew what a snake bite felt like.  Two years before, she had been bitten by a poisonous snake and had taken some time to recover.

"That was one of the reasons that I knew what to look for," she said.   "These new wounds, however, were not the same type of pain as when the other snake had bitten me and never turned black."

Since the attack, Peggy has refrained from mowing and is still trying to cope with the psychological shock.

"I have nightmares, and I really don't sleep much," she said.  "It has just been like a roller coaster.   I am just thankful that I am alive and here to tell my story."

And you thought you had a bad day!
