WASTEWATER BEER
Feeling as if you have tried every beer on the market? Well, here are two unique, new ones—brought to you by a California-based company—that are made from an unexpected ingredient: recycled wastewater.
Epicleantec has announced that it is now distributing its Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch beers across several US states.
The San Francisco-based water-purification business describes itself as a “pioneer in onsite water reuse solutions for the real estate industry.”
It has partnered with San Carlos-based Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company to create these new beers that contain used shower and laundry water from buildings that use Epic’s on-site purification systems.
“As water challenges grow worldwide, buildings continue to discard perfectly good water with tremendous potential for reuse,” Epic CEO Aaron Tartakovsky said in a press release. “By creating Shower Hour and Laundry Club, we are giving people a fun way to see recycled water in a new light.”
Buildings worldwide use about 15% of potable water — but very few recycle it. Epic argues that its reuse practices improve the efficiency of building water systems.
Shower Hour and Laundry Club are Epic’s first commercial releases.
In November 2022, the brand did launch a non-commercial sample of its first-ever wastewater beer called OneWater Brew.
After that limited 7,500-can release, TIME magazine recognized the company’s reuse system as one of the best inventions of the year.
Both new beers are not only environmentally friendly in their use of building wastewater but also in their innovative use of types of hops, grains, and yeasts that do not stress the environment.
So, how do they taste? Interestingly, no news articles about the new beers have any consumer feedback.
The company, so far, is the only source of taste description.
Shower Hour, Epic says, is “bursting with flavor and complexity while maintaining an easy-drinking balance. The bright citrus and tropical aroma balanced by a clean malt backbone give this beer a unique depth that sets it apart from the usual West Coast styles.” Got it?
Laundry Club is a little different: “Inspired by the classic ales of Cologne, Germany, this golden ale is light, smooth, and delicately balanced, with soft notes of honey and grain, a touch of malt sweetness, and a pleasantly dry finish.”
And, true beer connoisseurs might also be able to detect the very subtle flavors of Head and Shoulders shampoo and Tide washing detergent.
Both new products are currently available online for purchase in several US states including California plus in Washington DC—just in time for the holidays.
Cheers, anyone?
