WRONG-WAY GRANDPA
Recently, an 85-year-old man, living in Châtillon-sur-Thouet, a community in western France, accidentally went on the road trip of his life while trying to reach his doctor’s office in a neighboring village, located about 12 miles (20 km) from his home.
The elderly man never arrived for his doctor’s appointment, but it was only when he missed the meeting of a club to which he belonged that his family began to worry. Even his neighbors noticed his absence.
Soon, the police were contacted about his disappearance, and they, in turn, asked the military for help to geo-locate the man’s mobile phone.
The octogenarian’s family feared that something bad had happened to him, but they never expected the answer that they got from the authorities.
The military tracked down the missing man’s phone to a hotel 1020 miles (1700 km) away from his home. He had driven for 20 hours, passing through Italy to reach Zagreb in the southern European country of Croatia.
When asked how he had ended up there, the 85-year-old man said that he “didn’t understand what had happened,” adding that his erroneous road trip had been the result of a “GPS problem.”
Although clearly not in the prime of his life, the grandfather was not known to suffer from cognitive impairment or from disorientation issues.
His family traveled to Croatia to retrieve him, and he obviously has quite a story to share with them.
This story reminds us of another recent French driving mistake: the elderly man who forgot his wife at a gas station and drove for hours before discovering his error. Again, we suggest the possibility of too much good French wine.
