MERRY GAS LEAK!

This year, in addition to holiday greeting cards, some citizens of the US state of Indiana can expect a stinking Christmas card in their mail soon.

Citizens Energy Group announced that all central Indiana customers will be receiving mail with an unpleasant odor sometime this Christmas season.

Called an “educational card,” these mailings will have the aroma of “natural gas,” which is used by many people to heat their houses and cook their food.

This is the second year that Citizens is sending such cards to all of its customers.

The envelopes will contain an educational scratch-n-sniff card designed to help Hoosiers properly identify the smell of natural gas, an ability crucial to detecting dangerous gas leaks in their homes.

The cards are scented with mercaptan, the odorant used by Citizens to make their natural gas smell so bad that it is easily identified by customers.

The smell is often described as having the same odor as rotten eggs.

J.P. Ghio, Vice President of Energy Operations at Citizens Energy Group, said the cards are meant to help Hoosiers stay safe.

We want to educate all central Indiana residents about detecting natural gas,” Ghio said. “The scratch-n-sniff card gives our customers, their families, and their communities a safe way to get familiar with the odor. Natural gas leaks can be dangerous, if they are ignored.”

The card will also include safety information on what to do if a gas leak is identified.

The envelopes are expected to be delivered sometime between mid-December and mid-January. (To request a card, click here.)

Anyone who believes his or her home is experiencing a gas leak is advised to leave the premises immediately and call Poison Control or 911.

However, small children should be warned that the smell of rotten eggs does not always mean a dangerous situation.

After the Christmas feast, that smell may actually be in the house but it is not coming from Citizens Energy Group natural gas. It will be coming from the natural gases of overfed family members. Merry Christmas!
