CHEATING BEAUTIES

In Arab countries like Oman, camel beauty contests are a big deal.

Breeders from far and wide bring their best animals for a chance to win the title of “most beautiful camel in the land,” but in recent years, some events have been plagued by scandals involving various cosmetic enhancements.

Last month, the 2026 Camel Beauty Show Festival in Al Musanaa, Oman, was rocked by the disqualification of 20 participants after veterinarians ruled that they had been artificially “beautified.”

Botox, lip fillers, silicone reshaping, and artificial hump enlargement were some of the forbidden procedures discovered during the inspection.

Camel beauty contests are an important part of Arab tradition. For centuries, through selective breeding and grooming, camel owners have struggled to emphasize features like glossy coats, strong necks, full lips, long eyelashes, and firm, full humps, but in recent years, cosmetic cheating has become too common.

In this year’s contest, judges found that some animals had had their physical features cosmetically improved. Some camels had visible lip fillers; others had Botox to relax their facial muscles, and some participants even had visible signs of silicone implants to reshape their noses. Other forbidden enhancements included hump inflation and growth hormone injections to increase muscle shape.

But why would someone turn to cosmetic procedures to enhance the beauty of their camels? Well, because there is real money to be earned for the winners of camel beauty contests.

Total cash prizes in Oman camel beauty contests range from USD$57-66 million (NTD$1.7-2 billion), so individual winners in these contests can receive substantial amounts, often in the millions.

Owners can also make a fortune through sales and breeding rights. Thus, the temptation to use forbidden procedures to increase the chances of winning is high.

Camel beauty pageant officials have been forced to become much more strict, testing blood samples and using X-rays to check for artificial changes.

The ethical shame of cheating is clear enough, but veterinarians warn that cosmetic enhancements pose serious health risks to camels as well.

Fillers can trigger chronic inflammation. Hormone injections can cause imbalances and fertility problems, and Botox can interfere with chewing and drinking.

So, to all cheating beauties out there, in Hollywood and elsewhere, take a warning from these “enhanced” camels—it is wrong, unhealthy, and unnatural.
