EDIBLE BRIDE

Dubai advertises itself as the land of the impossible. From the tallest skyscrapers to the most luxurious hotels, this city never ceases to amaze the world with its over-the-top lifestyle.

And now, Dubai has broken another record with the world’s most expensive wedding cake, priced at a jaw-dropping USD$1 million (NTD$30,000,000)!

Meet Lulwa, also known as the “Million Dollar Bride,” a 120-kilogram wedding cake shaped like a life-sized Arabian bride.

She” was created by British baker Debbie Wingham, “the world’s most expensive cake designer,” and showcased at the Dubai Bride Show, in the UAE.

Lulwa – Arabic for “pearls” – was modeled on a traditional Arabic bride, wearing a stylish dress made of 50 kgs of sugar fondant.

The cake consists of dozens of layers of sponge and 25 kgs of chocolate. It weighs about 120 kilograms and had to be carried by no fewer than six people.

No one actually believes it is a cake. In fact, she is as good as a living being for me. I call her Lulwa,” Debbie Wingham said. “I have often been influenced by Middle- Eastern culture.

To actually make a Middle-Eastern-inspired wedding cake is really up there with my other exciting endeavors. Most of my pieces are based on realism, and I am glad that people liked it.”

The edible bride’s features are sculpted out of white modeling chocolate, and her dress is almost entirely made of lace-textured white fondant.

Her impressive gown is decorated with 5,000 hand-cut fondant flowers and 10,000 edible pearls.

Even though Wingham describes her creation as fully edible, that most certainly does not include the five large diamonds dotting the dress and headdress of the bride.

Priced at USD$200,000 (NTD$6.6 million), it was these diamonds that inspired the cake’s “Million Dollar Bride” name.

Lulwa was unveiled on the opening day of the Dubai Bride Show but later cut and served to guests of the event.

Is it just us, or does it seem, somehow, a little wrong to be eating a bride at a wedding show?
