TREASURED TRASH

An enterprising NYC artist capitalized on the hysteria surrounding Taylor Swift’s Madison Square Garden wedding by selling, to Swift fans, small plastic cubes filled with actual garbage from the city streets outside the Garden— including cigarette butts, straws, and even a discarded pregnancy test kit—for USD$25 (NTD$750) each.

And the trash cubes have already sold out.

Justin Gignac had been gathering refuse from city streets surrounding the “World’s Most Famous Arena” since last week’s closed-door ceremony, betting that pop music’s most loyal fans would open their wallets for the privilege of owning their very own piece of Taylor-related trash.

And, indeed, Swifties have quickly bought up the supply of “limited edition” trash cubes loaded with rubbish gathered in NYC after Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s huge July 3 wedding.

The bizarre gamble has paid off, with Gignac saying he has sold more than 1,300 of the 1 X 1 X .75 inch (2 X 2 X 1.5 cm) litter-stuffed cubes, in 30 countries.

The trash cubes, alternately labeled “New York City Garbage” and “Not Invited Edition (Taylor & Travis’ Wedding),” have been flying out the door as fast as Gignac can create them, even at the lofty price tag of $25 plus USD$10 (NTD$300) for shipping.

Each ‘sculpture’ is carefully arranged and sealed so it will not leak or smell,” the online ad assures would-be customers, “and is signed by Justin at the bottom.”

Gignac put on a tuxedo, armed himself with a litter picker, and went around Midtown Manhattan after the ceremony to collect items such as bottle caps, discarded plastic utensils, a single AirPod, and a Ring Pop candy; he then packaged them up and sold them on his website.

The website listing reads: “There is garbage on the floor after the party.  Collected from the edge of the love story, outside Madison Square Garden, as close to Taylor and Travis’ big day as you could have gotten without an invite.

This is the debut of ‘Pocket Garbage,’ so that you can carry a piece of the greatest day of your… I mean… their lives, wherever you go.”

Gignac has sold “limited edition” garbage cubes to commemorate the New York Giants’ 2012 championship parade, the Yankees’ 2009 parade, and other noteworthy Big Apple happenings over the years.

Swift’s star-studded wedding, which saw several New York City streets shut down, was attended by over 1000 celebrities like Brad Pitt, Ed Sheeran, Reese Witherspoon, Steven Spielberg, and Adam Sandler, who officiated the service.

Do not bother Swift fans with Iran, Ukraine, or global warming.  They know what is truly important: street trash from near her wedding place that they will treasure always or at least until the divorce.
