TREASURE HUNT
A waste collection company in Italy came to the assistance of a local resident who mistakenly threw away a lottery ticket worth USD$1.15 million (NTD$35,650,000).
Roberto Nicola Toscano, director of waste-collection company Sanb, said the resident had bought a MillionDay ticket, playing his usual set of numbers: 2-4-8-10-51.
But, after scanning the ticket at the store and receiving a message that said the ticket was "non-payable," he tossed it into the store’s trashcan.
Toscano said the person only later discovered that his numbers had won in the drawing and that the "non-payable" message just meant that the prize was too large to be paid at the store.
The player's family rushed back to the store, only to discover—Murphy’s Law!—that the trash had already been collected.
The family contacted Sanb, which was able to identify the truck that had collected the local store's waste.
"Once the vehicle was located, another problem arose: it could not be emptied at our premises because of possible waste contamination," Toscano said. "We had to contact another company in the area that could legally help us to sort it, and we started searching."
Toscano said his employees finally managed to locate the ticket, which was luckily intact, inside a bag filled with other people’s torn-up tickets.
Director Toscano admitted, "I did touch the lucky ticket because maybe it would bring us luck, too.”
And, maybe it did, because he and his employees bought a scratch-off ticket together that day and actually won—about USD$60 (NTD$2,000).
Let’s hope the new millionaire showed more than $60 worth of gratitude to his volunteer helpers. And take note: Murphy does not always rule in this life!
