MONUMENT TO LOVE
Marc Suárez is famous for his elaborate luxury cakes, but his latest creation is in a league of its own!
Measuring 3.5 meters tall and 1.8 meters wide, the Barcelona pastry chef’s masterpiece looks more like an architectural monument than a wedding cake.
After a Saudi family ordered a cake for a royal wedding, Suárez spent about a month and a half coming up with a suitable concept and another four months making his vision a reality.
Suárez, 35, describes himself as an artist rather than a pastry chef. He focuses on exclusive, unique "decorative pieces made with edible materials."
The order for the royal wedding cake came from a wedding planner. This planner also worked for one of Donald Trump's daughters.
The planner requested a "super-exclusive cake that could not be found anywhere else."
"I felt panic when I received the royal wedding commission in Paris," Suárez said in an interview. He added, "Sometimes I ask myself why I do this, because I get very nervous. But I understand it is part of my work, and it is worth it."
Even though he normally works alone, for this particular project, he enlisted several of his pastry-chef friends as well as their family members, because of the amount of work required.
Simply placing the 33,000 sugar flower petals on the cake was an extraordinary effort.
“Family, friends, and acquaintances all pitched in,” Suárez said. “The order was so large that even with my pastry-chef friends, we did not have enough manpower. I had to call on the mothers and fathers of friends who all helped me make the thousands of fondant petals, paint them, and then attach them to branches and flowers.”
In total, some 1,800 hours of work went into making this incredible cake, which ended up weighing a whopping 500 kilograms (1,100 lbs).
It was unveiled at the Paris Opera Garnier at the wedding of a Saudi couple who asked to remain anonymous.
Explaining the extreme intricacy of his cake, Suárez said that the newlyweds “wanted a cake that did not look like a cake but rather like a kind of monument that would pay homage to the event” and to the iconic venue that hosted it.
The royal cake featured a curtain that opened to reveal the couple's rings, much like an opera stage curtain.
The main cake for serving was a simple sponge cake located inside the larger artistic structure. Most of the creation was hand-molded sugar paste and white chocolate decoration, serving mainly for show.
The over-the top result, however, deeply impressed the clients. "The bride cried with emotion and called to congratulate me," Suárez recalled.
And in case you are interested, this edible masterpiece cost about €100,000 (NTD$3.7 million).
